Patagonia Light & Variable Boardshorts 18"
Patagonia Light & Variable Boardshorts 18"
It's not what these board shorts are as much as it is what they are not. Less is more. The right pair should go unnoticed and endure multiple days of wear and tear without issue or attention. This means expert patterning and 2 or 4 way stretch Polyester fabrics (but not too much). Pure Simplicity, defined in fit, fabric, and function. Features like pockets and zippers should be prioritized for the ocean but be functional on land. The right trunks stay tied and stay up even when untied. These shorts employ a simple webbing ladder lock under the grommets that keeps the ties synced when untied (genius). The pocket zipper endures countless wet dry cycles through salt and sand only sliding when prompted, never corroding. It's YKK, the best zips possible, you know you've seen those three little letters while staring at your crotch.
Pocketing should be sized for a half bitten chunk of wax or an ID with some wet mob of cash. Ideal, would be the ability to self store the whole short into the pocket as a bundle for easy travel (yes, they do that too).
It should take a 5 hour plus sessions to chap your inner thigh because this trunk dries in orderly time wicking salt and sand out and away as it does with simple construction and patterning. This is also because the "rise"(where the shorts will sit on your waist) and length of these shorts fit is almost perfect, never catching on your knee in critical moments.
Black wetsuits and white surfboards doesn't mean you have to have solid colored trunks but this also helps keep the price under 60 bucks for a board short that will last multiple summers.
