Volcom's Stoneys Boardshorts
Everyone loves Volcom jeans but what about their boardshorts ? Hurley, RipCurl, Billabong/RVCA and Quiksilver all rank above Volcom in a user poll just conducted by Stab. Thats insane to us because we love the mid-tier Volcom Stoneys boardshort line. Heres why.
The material : 71% Polyester / 16% Cotton / 6% Elastane / 7% Hemp. Only 7% hemp but we had to note that they are softer and comfortable to surf in while wet, which may be counterintuitive. They provide a nice alternative from more tech boardies constructed with 95% 4 way stretch polyester.
The length : 19" "Mid Length" outseam. Not 2001 long and not uncomfortably short. Perfect length for style and surf function.
Volcom standard/patented "Cinch Fly" (pictured below) : It refers to the drawcord closure of the boardies. Most notable part of "Cinch Fly" is that the closure system has 3 grommets, not 4 like every other boardshort. The drawcord wraps around the entire waistband which allows for a tight, custom fit. No other boardshort will have this and it's the Cinch Fly that makes the Stoney series a good buy. Overall there's less fabric, no zipper, no collapse, and ultimate comfort.
They dry in a decent amount of time because of the added cotton and hemp construction. Nothing insanely quick but if wet boardshorts irritate you then you must have a pair of surf shorts and an additional pair of boardies to chill in. These are great for sleeping in during surf trips (Cotton + Hemp). And most importantly good for surfing. The 4-way stretch elastane makes the Stoneys easy to wear surfing. These boardies are a sweet blend of comfort in and out of the water because of the Hemp + Cotton added to the industry standard polyester. $55 but since its the end of the Socal summer season they're $38.
